Description
Why structural column protection matters
In busy warehouse and industrial environments, structural columns face a constant risk of impact from forklifts, pallet trucks and other handling equipment operating in close proximity. The consequences of repeated column damage extend beyond maintenance costs. Structural integrity can be compromised, creating a hazard that affects the safety of the building and everyone working within it.
SteelWRAP Column Protection addresses this directly. It wraps the column on all four sides, absorbing and deflecting impacts before they reach the structure. At 760 mm high, it covers the zone where vehicle tines, bumpers and masts make contact most frequently.
Full metal construction with four-sided coverage
The system uses curved mild steel posts with double stacked Armco rails configured on all four sides. The curved post profile distributes impact energy more effectively than a flat-sided alternative. This increases the structural resilience of the SteelWRAP system. Its desgin eliminates the sharp edges and catch points that present a secondary hazard to drivers and equipment. Vehicles approach columns from any direction in a working warehouse. Four-sided coverage ensures protection regardless of approach angle.
The Armco rails sit behind the post profile, keeping the most impact-exposed component replaceable without disturbing the posts or the floor anchoring. When a rail section sustains damage, it removes and replaces in sections without taking the surrounding area out of service.
Adaptable to column size and site requirements
The overall width and length of the system are determined by the column dimensions and Armco configuration, ensuring a precise fit around the actual column rather than a generic approximation. Standard column sizes accommodated include 203 x 203 UC for light to medium structures, 254 x 254 UC for standard medium to large builds, and 356 x 368 UC for tall or wide-span frames. Where column dimensions fall outside these, the system can be configured to suit.
The baseplate measures 220 x 220 mm. Each post fixes using four Ø18 mm holes, secured with M16 x 150 mm throughbolts. Floor preparation requires a Ø16 mm drill hole with a minimum embedment of 85 mm. All fixings are supplied.
Finish, temperature range and UK manufacture
Brandsafe manufactures SteelWRAP Column Protection in the UK in powder coated or galvanised finishes. The galvanised finish provides long-term corrosion resistance in environments subject to moisture, wash-down activity or external exposure. Powder coating suits internal applications where colour coding or visual consistency across the site is a requirement.
The system performs across a temperature range of -40°C to 90°C, making it suitable for cold storage and freezer facilities as well as standard ambient warehouse environments. A single system covers the full range of conditions most sites present.
Supporting structural safety and compliance obligations
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, employers are required to maintain the fabric of the workplace in a condition that does not place people at risk. Where handling equipment operates in close proximity to structural columns, unprotected columns represent a foreseeable hazard that a responsible employer is expected to mitigate.
SteelWRAP Column Protection provides a documented physical control measure at the point of risk. For facilities managers, H&S managers and specifiers, installing purpose-built column protection in high-traffic areas demonstrates a proactive approach to structural asset protection and supports the requirement to reduce foreseeable hazards to a practicable minimum. For sites subject to insurance reviews or third-party safety audits, having column protection in place at the highest-risk locations strengthens the overall safety case for the building and its occupants.
