Description
Pedestrian segregation in the tightest spaces
In warehouse environments where walkways run alongside machinery, conveyor lines, picking zones and vehicle routes, clearly defining the pedestrian boundary is essential. Not every location needs a full heavy-duty barrier system. The SpaceSaver Single Bumper Pedestrian Barrier provides dependable, visible pedestrian separation at 1170mm high in a single rail configuration. It delivers reliable protection with a lighter specification than a double rail alternative, making it the practical choice where a full double bumper system is not required.
This makes it the practical choice for narrow routes, building edges and any location where space is genuinely at a premium but reliable pedestrian guidance is still required.
A lighter specification for lower-risk locations
The SpaceSaver Bumper Barrier uses a reduced tube diameter compared to the Brandsafe PAS 13 tested barrier systems. This produces a lighter, more compact design. It suits applications where a full-specification tested system is not required. The result is dependable segregation and clear visual guidance without the footprint or cost of a heavy-duty alternative. That makes it the practical choice for lower-risk internal pedestrian routes.
For locations requiring independently tested impact performance, the Brandsafe PAS 13 tested Polymer Barrier range provides the higher specification alternative.
HDPE and mild steel construction
The barrier uses a flexible HDPE rail combined with mild steel uprights. The HDPE rail deflects on impact and absorbs force before it reaches the floor. This reduces floor damage and the maintenance costs that follow. The mild steel uprights provide the structural support the system needs to perform reliably under repeated contact. Both materials work together to handle everyday operational demands without requiring frequent replacement or maintenance. Low maintenance is built into the design.
Both materials are non-toxic and fully recyclable. The barrier performs across ambient, chilled and freezer environments. This makes it suitable for food production facilities where hygiene and material safety are additional requirements alongside physical protection.
Visibility, sizing and installation
The SpaceSaver Single Bumper Pedestrian Barrier comes in Safety Yellow and Grey as standard, providing a clear visual boundary for MHE drivers and warehouse teams along pedestrian routes. Bespoke colours are available on request, subject to minimum order quantities.
The barrier stands at 1170mm high with a 200mm x 200mm baseplate. Standard lengths start from 1400mm and adjust to suit the specific layout of the site. Each post uses four Ø14mm fixing holes and fixes using M12 x 100mm throughbolts. Floor preparation requires a Ø12mm drill hole with a minimum embedment of 60mm. All fixings are supplied. Installation is straightforward and keeps operational downtime to a minimum. For barrier runs of 3 metres or more, a centre post is incorporated as standard to maintain structural integrity across the full length.
Where the SpaceSaver Single Bumper Pedestrian Barrier is specified
The barrier suits warehouse walkways, picking aisles, packing stations, conveyor lines and perimeter routes where pedestrians and MHE share operational space and a lighter specification is appropriate. Its slim single rail profile makes it particularly well suited to narrow routes where a double rail system would reduce available clearance. Wherever the space is tight, this barrier fits.
It works effectively as a standalone barrier section or as part of a wider pedestrian safety system across the site. A double bumper version is also available where a higher specification is required at the same location.
Supporting compliance and duty of care
Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must maintain safe working environments and take reasonable steps to protect people from foreseeable risks, including the risk of collision between pedestrians and MHE. Clearly defined and physically protected pedestrian routes are one of the most effective control measures available. This barrier supports both.
The SpaceSaver Single Bumper Pedestrian Barrier provides a practical, cost-effective physical boundary at the point where pedestrian and vehicle routes meet. For facilities managers and H&S managers, installing pedestrian barrier protection across warehouse routes demonstrates a proactive approach to workplace transport safety. It also supports the requirement to manage foreseeable risks to a practicable minimum. The result is clearer routes, fewer near misses and a safer working environment for everyone on site.
