Description
Modular pedestrian handrail for walkways and hazardous area protection
In warehouse and industrial environments, pedestrian walkways alongside machinery, conveyor systems and vehicle routes need clear physical definition. The Galvanised Pedestrian Handrail HR42 provides a modular, low-maintenance system that defines walkways, restricts personnel from entering hazardous areas and provides safe pedestrian guidance at 1100mm high.
It is particularly well suited to locations where head and limb clash risks exist, such as under conveyor systems or adjacent to moving machinery. It also suits loading bay perimeters, vehicle and pedestrian separation routes and any location where a robust, galvanised handrail system is required for long-term indoor or outdoor use.
Modular galvanised steel construction
The HR42 uses a 42mm diameter modular tube and clamp connection system, which connects tubes using clamps rather than welding. This allows the handrail to be assembled, reconfigured and extended on site without specialist tools or fabrication equipment. It is a fast and flexible choice for dynamic operational spaces where layouts change or phased installation is required.
The system is manufactured from mild steel with a galvanised finish, providing long-term corrosion resistance in demanding indoor and outdoor environments. All components supply in kit form with all fixings included, allowing installation to be completed quickly with minimal preparation.
Installation and fixing
The system uses standard 1600mm post centres, with overall dimensions variable to suit site requirements. Each post fixes using M12 x 100mm throughbolts with two Ø14mm fixing holes per post. Floor preparation requires a Ø12mm drill hole with a minimum embedment of 60mm. All fixings are supplied. Installation is straightforward and keeps operational downtime to a minimum.
The baseplate measures 140mm x 80mm and provides a secure anchor point on concrete substrates. The modular design means the system adapts to site-specific layouts including corners, access points and irregular configurations without bespoke fabrication.
Where the Galvanised Pedestrian Handrail HR42 is specified
The HR42 suits any location where a robust, modular handrail is required for walkway definition, hazardous area protection or pedestrian and vehicle separation. Typical applications include warehouse and factory pedestrian walkways, under conveyor systems and adjacent to moving machinery where head and limb clash risks exist, loading bay perimeters and access routes, vehicle and pedestrian separation zones in distribution centres and public and commercial environments requiring clear walkway guidance.
Its modular design makes it particularly well suited to sites where layouts change regularly or where the handrail needs to be extended or reconfigured over time without specialist installation resources.
Supporting compliance and duty of care
Under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers must keep pedestrian routes clearly defined and safe from vehicle encroachment and physical hazards. In locations where head and limb clash risks exist, a physical barrier at the correct height is one of the most direct control measures available.
The Galvanised Pedestrian Handrail HR42 provides a documented physical control measure at these locations. For H&S managers, facilities teams and specifiers, installing a modular handrail system across pedestrian routes and hazardous area boundaries demonstrates a proactive approach to workplace safety. It also supports the requirement to manage foreseeable risks to a practicable minimum. The result is clearer routes, fewer near misses and a safer working environment across the site.
